The Ickabog
A Book Review

by Simrah Mustafa
J.K. Rowling’s “Ickabog” is a great tale about friendship, forgiveness, and a whole lot of mystery. It was published on November 10, 2020. The book is about a kingdom called Cornucopia. Similar to a real cornucopia basket filled with edible goods, the kingdom contained various cities which were special for their different, scrumptious, delicious food.
The Marshlands, a city poorer than the rest in Cornucopia, was known for its legend of the Ickabog, which they believed to be a nasty creature that lives north of the Marshlands. This creature was repulsive, legend said, because the Ickabog ate humans. Some said the Ickabog looks like a dragon, while others think of it as a snake. Some say the Ickabog is fake. There were many different legends for the Ickabog.
Two evil Lords, Spittleworth and Flapoon, crumble the entire country of Cornucopia as if it was a cookie, manipulating the king, telling him that they’re best friends. All the while, they take control of the kingdom without the king’s knowledge. They start creating poverty in the kingdom, while the king remains oblivious.
To benefit from the entire country’s fear of the Ickabog, Spittleworth and Flapoon created an unfair tax system to make the people in Cornucopia poorer. This makes Ma Grunter, a nasty, abusive orphanage manager, very happy since all the people put their children in the orphanage because they thought they wouldn’t be able to take care of them by themselves. This way, Ma Grunter was able to get taxes from the government for taking care of children, but kept all the money to herself, making her incredibly rich...

My Neighbor Totoro
A Movie Review
by Caitlin Hou
My Neighbor Totoro is an
animated movie by Studio Ghibli.
This movie is about two sisters
called Mei and Satsuki Kusakabe
who moved into a countryside
home, and made friends with
their neighbors and forest spirits.
In my opinion, this movie is really
fun to watch because I like the art
style and the watercolor palette
that’s used to make it. This is
because the background’s colors
contrast, the characters are
well drawn and have their own
different features, and that the
aesthetics are very appealing. My Neighbor Totoro is drawn in an expansive, natural way that makes an atmosphere of trees, rice fields, and hills unraveling in the distance.
The plot and storyline is interesting and has a lot of side characters who are important in the story. The story is mainly about two girls who have a sick mother that moved into a country home and end up meeting a giant forest spirit they call Totoro. There are two other tiny spirits and a catbus spirit. The characters vary a lot and their role in the story do, too.
The characters’s faces have different personalities and feelings drawn into them. For example, Totoro is very enthusiastic and has a big heart, the catbus is prideful and helps Satsuki and Mei. The main characters, Satsuki and Mei, are very different because Satsuki is more mature and Mei is more childish and mischievous. In my opinion, My Neighbor Totoro is a great movie and I recommend that you watch it with your family!
Wings of Fire:
A Book Review

by Caitlin Hou
“Wings of Fire” is a book about dragons, fantasy, and magic. In “Wings of Fire”, the story is about a prophecy that includes 5 little dragonets. There are dragons in nine different kingdoms: the Mudwings, Seawings, Skywings, Nightwings, Sandwings, Rainwings, Silkwings, Leafwings, and Hivewings, and each type of dragon kingdom has its own personality, diet, habitat, and ability. The book is enchanting in its own unique way and has a wide variety of characters and is a very amazing series, so you should get a copy and read the series because of the magical world of books you’re about to enter.
