Wildcat Artist: Advika Bamididpati

This is a painting I did of a woman. I focused on having contrasting colors when making it, so you can see everything is black and white except for anything she’s wearing to make the different colors pop.

This digital piece is called the Weibel Wildcat on Zoom. It represents all the Weibel Wildcats (students ) doing digital learning and staying safe.

I wanted to use a lot of vibrant colors and patterns so I did, and I ended up with a pink piece of cake with cherries and strawberries.

Craft Spotlight: Stippling

by Advika Bamididpati

What is Stippling?

Drawing with dots? It sounds hard, but

many pieces of artwork are done just

with making these small dots, and

piling them up to make areas lighter

or darker, to add a 3D effect. This

would be similar to shading when

drawing, but it’s a bit different since

you are layering dots instead of lines

to make darker areas.This drawing

technique is called stippling. Stippling

was created by the artist, Giulio Campagnola,

in 1510. By making these small dots you can create

beautiful pieces. Stippling can be done and is done with/on

a variety of mediums. The tools you need could come down to

just a pencil and paper, and you’d still be able to use this technique.

How to Stipple?

To use this quirky technique, you may want to start by grabbing your piece of paper and pencil. Now, you can draw an outline of the shapes you need to make your drawing. For example, I can draw a circle. I would now make that a sphere by adding tiny dots inside of it, and shading one spot to create shadow and make it 3 dimensional. It could be as simple as that, or you can make a larger project like a landscape, or a person.

Depending on your project and how fast you're working, big projects can take you a couple hours, days, or maybe even weeks to make.

Fun Facts

The stippling technique is also known as “pointillism”. Stippling is said to be similar to making pixels in real life. Stippling can also be used in either illustrations or life drawings, but you would rarely see it in types of drawings like cartoons.

 3D Printing: An Artist's Friend

by Ira Thota

Imagine all of your ideas coming true, your imagination as your only limit. Well, this can all be accomplished with help from one invention… the 3D printer! Not only is the 3D printer used for the medical field to our average homes, but also for art! Artists can use 3D printing technology to design sculptures with just their computer! While using a 3D printer, a person is capable of creating anything they please, whether it is a sculpture, to items that are used daily. The possibilities are limitless!

3D Printing & Sculpting

3D printing can make sculpting much easier, and will allow you to fix your problems smoothly. Without 3D printing an artist would be required to draw it out on paper, to make the sculpture and if they made a mistake they would have to re-do it, but with 3D printing, they can solve all of their problems with the computer. 3duniverse.org states, “A significant benefit of 3D printing is that artists can solve all of their design problems as they enter the information from their images into the computer ... it will print out the object without having to solve the problem again.” This information shows how 3D printing makes it much easier to fix your problems with sculpting, and will allow you to save time. All you need to do is input some information into it.

Using 3D Printing to Make Household Objects

Although 3D printing can be used for making more complex art, like sculptures, it can additionally be used to make amazing household objects. For example, you could make a coaster that looks just like a famous piece of art, or even just a simple cup. No matter what it is, you could use 3D printing technology to create wondrous designs. All3dp.com says, “The wild and wonderful world of 3D printing has given rise to some truly fantastic room decor ideas.” This quote is explaining that when using the 3D printer, you can make art with household objects.

No matter how big, or small, the 3D printer can turn anything into a work of art. It is very simple to do this whether you are experienced, or are just a beginner. The world of 3D printing has helped artists all around the world achieve their dreams and their ideas to come true.

Craft Spotlight: Origami & Me

by Ira Thota

What is Origami?

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding,

and it is used to create beautiful paper crafts.

It is typically made with a small square sheet

of paper, and by simply folding it, you can make

creative designs. It is derived from the

Japanese words ori (folding) and kami (paper).

People from around the world use origami and

enjoy the calming effects and creative results.

To make a pure origami model, you must only

use a single sheet of paper. There must be no

cutting, glueing, taping, or any other modifications.

It can be a bit of a challenge to learn, but in the

end the results are worth it.

The Benefits of Origami

The benefits of origami are plenty.

According to Gymboree Global,

one of the benefits of Origami is

how it causes your fingers to star

t moving faster. It causes this

because making intricate folds

require you to move swiftly.

If you hesitate on a fold, it might

not turn out as expected.

Doing origami gives people a sense of accomplishment or success. During times of boredom, I make sure to make a few origami pieces. If it turns out well, I feel accomplished that I was able to do it. Without it, I would lose my creative skills.

Why I like Origami

My origami journey started in

kindergarten, when my grandpa

showed me how to make a flying

boat. He made a few out of

newspapers and I was awestruck.

After he taught me, I continued

trying to recreate the boat, which

resulted in me enjoying origami.

I wasn’t able to do many folds,

so my mom helped me make

more simple models.

After a while I started to get a hang of it, and made various creations with just a piece of paper. Liking origami led to me having a fondness for crafts. I have done several origami related projects, such as a fundraiser for a local food bank. Doing origami has made my life a whole lot better.
