...continued Black Holes

Some Fun Facts

There is at least one black hole in every big galaxy (including our Milky Way). The first ever scientifically proven black hole was Cygnus X-1. Cygnus, for the constellation it was in. Cygnus means swan in latinized greek. X since it emitted X-rays and 1 for the fact that it was the first black hole ever found. The X- rays come from the accretion disk. The atoms spin so fast that they fuse. When they fuse it gives off extreme heat. The heat gives off the X-rays. The astronomers found it because of one astronomer looking for a binary star and found that the star was circling the black hole instead. V616 Monocerotis is the closest black hole to Earth. It is about 3,000 light-years away from Earth. A little known fact is that black holes can disappear. The radiation in space makes them smaller. The process is very slow, and would take longer than the age of the universe.

Black holes are extraordinary in a number of different ways! As astronomers keep researching we should learn about the wonders of space. We have learned so much about space and black holes. Now you know that they are literally out of this world!

...continued Cell Science

What are the two types of cells?

There are two main species of

cells. One is a plant cell and the

other is an animal cell. They are

very similar, but have some

different parts.

What are the parts of a cell?

Cells are made of parts called

organelles. Each organelle has a

specific job to do to keep the cell

working. The nucleus is the

“big brain”. It controls what the

cell does. The membrane is the outer layer of the animal cell. It controls what goes in and out of the cell. The cell wall is the shell of the plant cell. It keeps the stiffness and the shape of the plant. The mitochondria is something every cell needs. It breaks down food and releases energy for the plant to use. Chloroplasts convert sunlight to food. They do this through a process called photosynthesis. The vacuole stores food, waste, and water for the cell. The cytoplasm is a gel like material that keeps all the organelles from moving. Those are the main parts of cells.
